GUN OF THE DAY - French St. Etienne Pistol
One of the first French handguns used in the newly created United States of America, our GOTD is a .70 caliber flintlock pistol that featured a bronze receiver onto which the barrel and lock components mounted. This c. 1777 example was manufactured at the St. Etienne ****nal, and its graceful profile later helped establish similar American martial pistols, much as the Charleville musket helped create the US M1795 flintlock musket.

GUN OF THE DAY - Volcanic Pistols
Before Smith & Wesson became renowned for revolving arms, their stock in trade was with a lever-action handgun design that utilized self-contained cartridges. Unlike many other arms of the day, these pistols had lead projectiles filled with powder and with primers at the end. But soon S&W dropped out of the picture, and the new company, Volcanic Repeating Arms, went to a rimfire cartridge system.

GUN OF THE DAY - Winchester M1873 Combination Gun
Maybe you want a GOTD that offers double capability, like a rifle that also provides the ability to fire shotgun shells. Gunsmith Horace Warner took a ca. 1884 Winchester Model 1873 rifle chambered in .38-40 and added a 12 gauge shotgun barrel on the top. Through an ingenious connecting rod system, the rifle's hammer can connect to the shotgun's firing pin mounted in the upper breechblock. To maximize the rifle's accuracy, its sights were shifted to the top of the smoothbore barrel.

GUN OF THE DAY - Russian Free Pistol
Our GOTD is free - well, at least it is considered a free pistol in the arena of international competition. Single-shot .22 pistols like this cased Russian example dominate modern pistol shooting at venues like the Olympics. When the scoring bullseye on the target at 50 meters is smaller than a dime, every bit of accuracy helps and having a grip that can be wrapped about the shooting hand is part of the package.

GUN OF THE DAY - Colt Patersons
Doubling up on our GOTD allows us to showcase even more percussion rarity. The early Colt revolvers manufactured in Paterson, NJ were offered in three different sizes. Our larger example was called the No. 2 or Belt Model and was a .31 caliber five-shooter. But our smallest Paterson Colt was the No. 1 or Pocket Model. But many collectors have decided to call this .28 caliber Colt the "Baby" Paterson.
